Pediatric Dentistry (Pedodontics)

Pedodontics (Pediatric Dentistry) is a branch of dentistry that deals with oral and dental health problems of infants, children, and individuals whose oral structure requires special attention. Pedodontics is the only age-specific field of dentistry.
However, this does not limit the range of operations that pedodontists can perform. Like other specialists, pedodontists can perform extractions, fillings, root canal therapy, and all other procedures that the patient might need. Pedodontists are the first dental professionals once encountered in the span of their life and dental healthcare. Pedodontists perform all oral and dental health problems and preventive treatments from infancy to young adulthood. Pedodontists also have the knowledge and experience to solve oral and dental health problems of children with disabilities and chronic diseases requiring special attention.

Just like pediatricians, pedodontists are specially trained to handle the manifestation of (oral) diseases in children and oral and dental health problems specific to young patients. In addition to solving children’s oral and dental health problems, pedodontists receive specialty training in preventive dentistry practices. They are also trained in effectively communicating with children. They are well-versed in directing positive behavior towards overcoming dentist fear and other techniques that help patients establish a healthy relationship with the dental profession early in life.
